Chatuchak Market
Unfortunately, not all Bangkok-tourists have the opportunity to visit this amazing market — the largest one in Thailand. The reason is that the market is open only on Saturdays and Sundays, which obviously is the reason for Chatuchak being commonly referred to as “the Weekend Market”. The most convenient way to get there is either by subway (MRT) or by skytrain (BTS). Are you taking the subway you can get off either at the station “Kamphaeng Phet” or at “Chatuchak Park”. If you go off at the first station, just follow the sign saying “Weekend Market” (or Chatuchak). You will get up in the middle of everything. Should you instead be taking skytrain you shall get off at Mo Chit station. Follow the signs communicating “Exit 1” and walk in the opposite direction as the train you arrived with.

Previously, this enormous market was located in the Sanam Luang Park, not far from Grand Palace. However, in 1982 the market had to change location as it had grown rapidly. Today, the market covers an area similar to no less than five football pitches. More than 6,000 market stalls, many of which are run by Thais with a true entrepreneur heart, are to be found at the market site. Would it not be for the massive number of visitors, the many small businesses here would obviously not survive. Thousands and yet thousands of people come here to shop every weekend. The supply of goods is attractive, while the prices are still very low. Everything between unique handicrafts and art, to used as well as new clothes can be found at Chatuchak. You will also find pets, plants, watches, shoes, bags and much more! Many tourists leave the site with huge, strengthened bags — bags that are bought only in order to being able to carry all stuff. Despite many visitors being able to get well along in the extreme supply situation, others find themselves under confusion and stress and are having trouble just knowing what to buy among all fantastic things. If you belong to the “buying a huge, strengthened bag”-category, keep in mind that the shopping might lead to problems with overweight when travelling back home. That might be expensive.

The best advice to someone who wants to get as much as possible out from the market in positive terms, without getting exhausted due to the heat, is to visit the market early in the morning. Arriving around 08.00 am is not a bad idea. Already around 10.30 the area is crowded to an extent that might become a test for your mood.

Visiting Chatuchak Market, if you are in Bangkok during a Saturday or a Sunday, is — according to us — one of the musts when you arrive as a tourist to the Thai capital. The Market is open between 07.00 and 6.00 pm, Saturday and Sunday. However, at 07.00 far from all stalls are open. Please click here to see some pictures from the Chatuchak Market.
